Old Friends - A Story In PicturesAt Wildlife SOS, we love a good photo series that tells a deeper story. This first image above is senior elephant Erika. When she was out for a walk with dear friends Jasmine (below) and Lilly (not shown), they stopped to take a nap in a blooming meadow. They had spent much of their time browsing and enjoying the quiet forest. Likely mimicking each otherβs behaviour, they both stood up to get the sweetest fresh leaves from the trees. Movement and stretching are so good for the elderly ladies. We donβt often share photos from our Haryana Elephant Rehabilitation Centre (ERC) because we donβt have a photographer embedded at the location. The facility is in the middle of lush forest, and the amenities are more rustic than our larger Elephant Hospital and the public Elephant Conservation and Care Centre. 84-year-old Ella, the missing member of the elephant quartet, passed away recently. Living the past 14 years at the Haryana centre with her friends, she was able to know care, kindness and her own herd of friends in her final years. Weβre heartbroken for her loss, but also so thankful we were able to help her experience peace. This photo series tells a story of the life and love Ella was able to experience, thanks to generous supporters like you. Read our tribute to Ella. Read more about Jasmine, Delhiβs last begging elephant, Erika and Lilly. Photos by Vineet and Chinmoy.

Thatβs recent rescue Jenny! She was orphaned as a wild cub and given a home at our Agra Bear Rescue Facility (ABRF). Her healthy white teeth and beautiful muzzle are a testament to her wild life, free from exploitation as a βdancingβ bear. Photo by Vineet.

Worldwide, birdwatching has seen a big surge in popularity, particularly since 2020. Driven by a pandemic-era interest in nature and youth engagement, many people are discovering the birds around them. Mobile phone apps are making bird identification even easier! We love these apps from Cornell Labs: Merlin for identifying bird calls, and eBirds for tracking the birds migrating through your area. Weβve also got iNaturalist projects set up, where you can see the nature spotted around our Agra Bear Rescue facility. This sunbird photo was taken by Abhiman.

Anti-Poaching and Snare PatrolsWildlife SOS teams are out walking in protected sloth bear forests in Karnataka looking for snares. The deadly traps are usually set for wild pigs, but theyβre illegal and indiscriminate killers for wildlife. Teams walk 8-12km a night (8-10 miles) along wildlife trails, disabling and seizing what they find. Itβs dangerous work, with frequent encounters with venomous snakes. During the day, teams educate local villagers about the evils of snares.
